The 1100 Broadway project combines the adaptive reuse of the Key System Building, which was heavily damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, with the construction of a new twenty-story building. SGH was the structural engineer for the...
The new South Terminal Building at Tocumen International Airport is 666 m long, 25 m high, encloses 75,000 m2 of space, and is separated into five zones by seismic joints. Zone 3 is a triangle shaped four-story, reinforced concrete/steel...
The AISC Seismic Provisions require that continuity plates in a special moment frame (SMF) welded moment connection be connected to the column flanges by complete-joint-penetration groove welds. Tran et al. (2013) have proposed a design procedure...
The AISC Seismic Provisions require that continuity plates in a special moment frame (SMF) welded moment connection be connected to the column flanges by complete-joint-penetration groove welds. Tran et al. (2013) have proposed a design procedure that allows the designer to evaluate the required forces in the continuity plates such that more economical welds (e.g., fillet welds) can be used; the required thickness of the continuity plates also need not be the same as that prescribed in the AISC Seismic Provisions.
Many modern buildings use steel special moment frames for their seismic lateral force-resisting system. A moment frame is comprised of a rectangular system of rigidly connected columns and beams that resist moment and shear forces developed...
Structural steel special moment frames often are used as part of the seismic force-resisting systems in buildings designed to resist earthquakes with substantial inelastic energy dissipation. They are one of a few select systems that U.S....

Abstract: Structural steel special moment frames often are used as part of the seismic force-resisting systems in buildings designed to resist earthquakes with substantial inelastic energy dissipation. They are one of a few select systems that U....
While engineers in the Western U.S. are likely familiar with the rigorous connection design requirements instituted following the Northridge earthquake, many engineers in the central and eastern U.S. are just becoming familiar with the very...
Abstract: This paper provides a comparison of the maximum inter-story drifts and floor response spectra of both a three and nine story building each with four different steel structural systems – moment frame, buckling restrained braced...
Abstract: This paper will provide a comparison of the maximum inter-story drifts and floor response spectra for 3 and 9 story buildings using both steel and aluminum BRBs designed with an R-factor of 7. The buildings had the same dimensions as...
