Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Awards 2017 Buchberg Scholarship to Georgia Tech Student Arjun Bir

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is proud to present the fourth-annual Buchberg Scholar Award to Arjun Bir, a civil engineering junior at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Arjun was the runner-up for the scholarship in 2016 and spent his summer with SGH as a technical intern in the firm’s Building Technology group.

SGH established the Buchberg Scholar Award to honor Brandon Buchberg, a former employee and Georgia Tech alumnus who unexpectedly passed away in November 2013. The firm grants the award to an engineering student who embodies Brandon’s depth of character and breadth of extracurricular activities. The award provides up to $20,000 over four years to support undergraduate and graduate coursework, and a paid internship at SGH.

“I was inspired by how [Brandon] lit up the lives of those around him through simple things done with seemingly extraordinary involvement, and I left [SGH] with an immense amount of affection for someone I never actually met,” Arjun said in an article on the Georgia Tech website. “I think I have the potential to spend my limited time on this planet with a similar fire and to become a torch-bearer of Brandon’s legacy.”

Arjun shares Brandon’s passion for civil engineering and charitable involvement. As a teenager in Bangalore, India, he founded a nonprofit organization that provides college scholarships and mentorships to less-fortunate students. At Georgia Tech, he works with the Brown Water Group to develop low-cost water purification and testing methods for the developing world.
