National Academy of Engineering Elects SGH Alumni Glenn Bell and Donald Dusenberry

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) recently elected Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) alumni Glenn Bell and Donald Dusenberry to its 2024 membership class, honoring their outstanding professional achievements. NAE notes, “Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.”

“Glenn and Don are legendary engineers who have dedicated their professional lives to improving the built environment and delivering top-notch solutions,” said Niklas Vigener, SGH Chief Technical Officer (CTO). “I have long admired their work and have learned so much from both of them, and I am thrilled to see their recognition from the NAE. It’s a true honor.”

NAE recognized Glenn for “creativity in building design, advancing forensic engineering, and innovation in engineering education.” Glenn spent forty-five years of his career at SGH, serving as the firm’s CEO from 1995 to 2016, and currently serves as a Research Civil Engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He is committed to giving back to his profession through his involvement with the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and the Charles Pankow Foundation. During his tenure at SGH, Glenn spearheaded many notable projects, including the Bahá’í House of Worship in Santiago, Chile; Spaceship Earth in Orlando, FL; and the Hyatt Regency Hotel walkway collapse investigation in Kansas City, MO.

Don was recognized by NAE for “national structural design load standards, and for standards covering blast, fire, and progressive collapse.” He was with SGH for forty-six years, having retired as a Senior Principal in 2021. He currently serves as the chair for two ASCE committees: Disproportionate Collapse Mitigation of Building Structures and Blast Protection of Building Standards. While at SGH, Don focused his work on complex investigations, analyses, and peer reviews of buildings, building components, and infrastructures. His notable projects include overseeing collapse investigations of the World Trade Center Towers in New York, NY, and the Pentagon in Washington, DC.
