New York City Marathon Displays

Scope/Solutions

With over 50,000 runners in 2014, the TCS New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world.  Turning city streets into a raceday event requires eye-catching graphics and signage.  SGH evaluated the structural design for several temporary installations that lined the route for the 44th New York City Marathon.

SGH evaluated the design for several aluminum-framed display pieces along the race route, including the Mile Marker, Scenic Tower, Wayfinding Cube, Clock Tower, Finish Tower A, Finish Tower B, and the 10 ft by 70 ft finish wall.

Our work included the analysis of the aluminum-framed structures and the design of concrete ballast to ensure that the pieces would not slide or overturn under wind loads.

Highlights of our work includes the following:

  • Review of the proposed design documentation
  • Analysis of the aluminum-frame and connections to withstand wind loads
  • Proposed design modifications, as necessary
  • Prepared signed and sealed structural drawings showing the general framing layout, aluminum tube sizes, connection details, and ballast details
