MBTA Systemwide Overhead Infrastructure Assessments
Scope/Solutions
Looking to enhance public safety by mitigating risks from falling objects in public areas, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) engaged SGH to assess the condition of overhead infrastructure at thirteen of the system’s stations.
SGH performed visual and hands-on surveys to help us develop and prioritize a list of hazards the MBTA will use to schedule repair work. Our approach included following the MBTA safety protocols, visually inspecting all overhead assets, pushing and pulling overhead objects, and sounding overhead concrete to identify delaminations and potential spalls.
We developed a customized smartphone application that our field teams used to record and integrate our observations with the MBTA’s asset management software, Trapeze. SGH worked closely with MBTA, capitalizing on the multiple Green Line diversions in early 2024 to expedite this safety-critical work.
SGH tracks the hands-on inspection status at the asset level and provides the MBTA with regular project updates, including our recommendations for future investigation and repair work. We collaborate with the MBTA to prioritize the repairs so that non-emergency work can be included in planned renovations and highlight trends that demonstrate the potential need for longer-term capital planning projects.
