Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute facility

Scope/Solutions

The Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute (ATRI), part of the Keck School of Medicine of USC, is leading testing of early detection and treatment methods. Needing additional freezer space to store their growing collection of cryopreserved specimens, ATRI took on additional space. The facility includes laboratory space and a freezer farm with a backup emergency generator. SGH helped design structural modifications and anchorage for their equipment.

The freezers hold invaluable samples and protecting them is critical to ATRI’s important research. SGH designed a restraint and anchorage system for the freezers, allowing them to be relocated when needed, while also preventing them from moving or toppling in their stored location during an earthquake. Our cost-effective and modifiable design solution uses metal strut channels, brackets, and anchors.

The laboratory also required specific environmental conditioning and new mechanical equipment. Our work also included evaluating the existing roof structure’s ability to support new rooftop air handling units and designing a new concrete pad and enclosure for the emergency power generator to maintain constant power for the freezers.
