Benjamin Schafer Honored with AISI Leadership Award for Contributions to Steel Research

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) recently honored Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) Consulting Principal Benjamin Schafer with their 2022 Market Development Industry Leadership Award for his steel-related research efforts and standards development during his career. AISI established the market development awards to “recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing the competitive use of steel in the marketplace.”

Ben specializes in the advanced analysis and design of cold-formed steel members and systems and currently serves as the Willard and Lillian Hackerman Professor of Civil and Systems Engineering and the Director of the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI) at Johns Hopkins University. Ben is also the Founding Director of the Cold-Formed Steel Research Consortium (CFSRC). He is a recognized expert in the behavior, analysis, experimentation, and design of steel structures and has published extensively on related topics in cold-formed steel, structural stability, structural reliability, computational mechanics, natural hazards, and earthquake engineering.

AISI President and CEO Kevin Dempsey presented the award at a ceremony in Washington, DC. He noted, “We are pleased to recognize the leadership and commitment of Dr. Ben Schafer, who has made many significant contributions to advancing the competitive use of steel in construction and has been a key factor in the success of AISI’s standards development activities for his entire career. His contributions have enabled transformative changes in the building construction industry, helping to ensure that steel remains the material of choice.”
