Mass Timber Buildings: Sharing Lessons for Coordinating Enclosure Design
Mass timber is an innovative construction material that has quickly gained popularity across the building industry. Owners and project teams choose this structural material for several reasons, including its speed of construction, sustainability benefits, fire resistance, and aesthetic value. When designing building enclosure systems for these structures, however, project teams need to evaluate coordination, detailing, and construction practices to help realize these sustainability and performance benefits. In this webinar, we will introduce mass timber building products—including glued-laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT)—and explore their related benefits for constructability and sustainability. We will also share lessons learned from case-study examples to review fire-rated penetrations; coordination of enclosure, structural, and mechanical design; durability of exterior timber; acoustic considerations; and sequencing of temporary protection.

About the Speaker
WoodWorks Wood Products Council
Chelsea Drenick is a licensed structural engineer in the state of California. She received her B.S. in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University. As a Regional Director for WoodWorks, a non-profit organization, she helps project teams achieve successful wood buildings in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah. Prior to joining WoodWorks, Chelsea spent nine years in structural design consulting. Her experience is in a variety of sectors, including residential, higher education, and retrofit of existing and historic structures. She is passionate about sustainability and the use of wood as a building material to reduce the embodied carbon emissions of structures.
Travis St. Louis designs, investigates, and rehabilitates building enclosures on a wide range of projects for industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential facilities. He serves as the corporate practice group leader for roofing and waterproofing at SGH. In addition to roofing and waterproofing, Travis’s expertise also includes contemporary facade and window systems. He collaborates with owners, architects, and design-build teams to develop coordinated solutions for technical challenges. Travis combines his field and design experience with excellent communication skills to deliver value-driven consultation on a wide range of new design projects, assessments, and repairs of existing buildings.
