Quantum Me and Quantum Dee Sculptures

Davis McCarty, a Chicago-based artist, exhibits his sculptures at museums, iconic buildings, and art festivals around the world. As part of Mayor Emanuel’s 50 x 50 Neighborhood Arts Project, the Beverly Area Arts Alliance and 49th Ward commissioned McCarty for two installations: Quantum Me and Quantum Dee. SGH consulted on the structural design for the sculptures.

Scope | Solutions

Quantum Me and Quantum Dee, the two dichroic Plexiglas, aluminum, and stainless steel sculptures, were installed at the 99th Street - Beverly Hills Metra Rock Island station and Juneway Beach Park, respectively.

Working with Davis McCarty, SGH consulted on aspects of the sculptures’ structural design and stability. Highlights of our work include the following:

  • Evaluated the effects of wind loads and people climbing/pushing on the sculptures

  • Reviewed the effects of perforations in aluminum fins on the structures’ performance

  • Analyzed the sculptures’ potential for overturning and advised on the required foundation size to resist it
