Through their Patient Family Housing Program, Boston Children’s Hospital offers accommodations for the families of children being treated at the hospital. Previously a fraternity house, the existing building at 241 Kent Street was unoccupied for some time and in a state of disrepair when the hospital acquired the structure. SGH provided structural design services for the project, including restoring the existing structure and constructing a new addition.

Scope | Solutions

SGH designed the structure for a wood-framed addition behind the existing three-story house. The addition doubled the square footage of the house and added a new elevator to provide wheelchair accessibility.

When the contractor discovered deteriorated structural components in the existing building, we designed repairs. Our repair design included strengthening and replacing deteriorated wood framing, as well as reconstructing two damaged brick chimneys. Following a fire during construction, SGH inspected the damage and recommended replacing damaged beams.
