San Diego, CA
San Diego State University, Aztec Recreation Center
Scope/Solutions
San Diego State University wanted to renovate and expand its existing recreation center to meet the student body’s desire for more modern amenities and space for additional programs. The project, which was phased to allow the existing facility to remain operational during the work, doubles the center’s size and creates a new plaza—The Canyon—to support outdoor activities. SGH provided building enclosure commissioning services for the project.
Working with the lead commissioning consultant, SGH consulted on the building enclosure commissioning and construction. Highlights of our work include:
- Reviewing the design for below-grade and plaza waterproofing, exterior walls clad with rainscreen panels, traditional and curved curtain walls assemblies, windows, and roofing, including areas that support a solar array
- Collaborating on the commissioning plan and specifications to define the performance goals and testing requirements
- Consulting on an onsite mockup of the exterior wall assemblies
- Reviewing enclosure submittals for general conformance with the project requirements
- Witnessing air and water penetration testing of installed windows and curtain walls
- Visiting the site to observe installation of the enclosure systems and helping the project team address field conditions
- Preparing a final commissioning logs summarizing the work and supporting the team’s LEED certification effort
