National Institutes of Health, Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences, Student Faculty Academic Center

Scope/Solutions

The Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) Graduate School at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers undergraduate- and graduate-level courses related to biomedical research. NIH donated the 26,000 sq ft space located in the Clinical Center (Building 10) to FAES.  FAES undertook the renovation project, which allowed FAES to consolidate many of their functions into one space and to create a campus focal point.  SGH was the structural engineer for the project.

The Academic Center includes classrooms, laboratories, student center with a bookstore and lounge, administrative offices, a faculty center, and a dining area.  LSY’s design showcases the previously unused, multistory atrium with elevated indoor terraces that offer collaboration and lounge space.

Highlights of SGH’s design for this project include the following:

  • New composite steel infill framing to create public terrace levels within the previously open atrium
  • Structural support for hung partitions that give flexibility to divide or combine classrooms based on program needs
  • New framing system to support reconfigured skylight
  • Support framing for new fire shutters used to provide safe egress out of the area
