Fig+PICO Convention Center Hotels
Scope/Solutions
Located on South Figueroa Street across from the Los Angeles Convention Center, the AC Hotel and Moxy rise from a shared podium. The two, thirty-seven-story hotels are operated by Marriott and offer more than 700 rooms, ground-level retail; shared meeting and event spaces; and twelve bars, restaurants, and clubs. The property features an outdoor pool deck on the ninth floor, rooftop terraces, and one of the nation’s largest digital displays. SGH consulted on the building enclosure design for the project.
SGH consulted on the design of below-grade and podium waterproofing, glazing assemblies, exterior opaque wall cladding and water-resistive barriers, terrace waterproofing, roofing, and interior waterproofing for hotel bathrooms. Highlights of our work include:
- Reviewing the proposed design for airtightness, watertightness, thermal/condensation performance, and constructibility
- Helping develop details for the various systems and to integrate them with each other, including at expansion joints and transitions from the towers to the podiums, terraces, and roofs
- Participating in the design-assist process for the facade, primarily clad with curtain wall assemblies with stone and metal panel rain screens on the podium structure, and helping with details for air and water-resistive barriers and insulation
- Helping design waterproofing and roofing for the amenity terraces
- Consulting on a facade mockup and visiting the curtain wall factory to observe their production processes
- Providing construction phase services, including reviewing submittals, witnessing performance testing of curtain wall system, providing full-time monitoring for below-grade waterproofing systems, visiting the site to observe installation of the other building enclosure systems, and helping address field conditions
