University of Southern California, University Gateway

Scope/Solutions

University Gateway is a multi-use development located just across the street from the University of Southern California. The two, eight-story buildings offer students many amenities, including 421 modern apartment units, a fitness center, rooftop terraces, balconies, landscaped courtyards, and 78,000 sq ft of retail space. Clad with a combination of thin brick veneer and cement plaster, the developmentā€™s aesthetics are commensurate with the nearby neighboring campus. SGH assisted the project team with designing waterproofing and the building enclosure.

SGH helped the design team solve project challenges, including waterproofing difficult spaces, such as balconies above living spaces, a plaza deck over retail space, and a spa on the roof. Our building enclosure consulting services included the following:

  • Participating in design review and coordination meetings
  • Reviewing the proposed the building enclosure design and providing recommendations to improve performance
  • Developing sketch details and guide specifications incorporated into the project documents
  • Attending preconstruction meetings
  • Visiting the site to observe ongoing construction and compare with the design intent
  • Coordinating and testing mockups of the building enclosure systems to compare with performance requirements
