SGH Staff Members to Present at ASCE-COPRI Ports ‘22 Conference

Several members of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger’s (SGH) Heavy Civil and Marine practice area will take part in the proceedings at the PORTS ’22 conference hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (ASCE-COPRI). Held 18-21 September in Honolulu, HI, the event will convene a global audience of professionals focused on ports, harbors, waterways, and other marine topics to share best practices and discuss new advancements in the field. SGH Senior Principal William Bruin serves as Organizing Committee Chair for the conference.

Short Courses and Special Sessions

SGH staff members will lead several short courses and special sessions:

  • 18 September, William Bruin and Associate Principal Rune Iversen will serve as instructors for the “Vessel Mooring and Berthing” short course, which introduces how to determine requirements and design loads for fixed marine structures such as piers, wharves, dolphins, and other port and harbor structures.
  • 18 September, SGH Senior Project Manager Julie Galbraith will teach the
Seismic Design of Piers and Wharves” short course, which addresses major topics in seismic design in general, as well as analysis and detailing of marine structures in particular.
  • 20 September, SGH Senior Principal Gayle Johnson will moderate the “ASCE 61” special session, which includes presentations and a panel discussion of significant changes to the next edition of ASCE 61, the standard for seismic design of piers and wharves. SGH Principal Carlos Ospina and Julie Galbraith will also participate in the session.
  • 21 September, Rune Iversen will moderate the “PIANC WG211” technical session, which includes presentations about the forthcoming “PIANC WG211 – Design of Fender System” guidelines for designing fender and berthing systems for a wide variety of terminals.

Technical Program

SGH professionals will also present papers and lead sessions as part of the event’s technical program:
