Engineering Solutions for Coastal Resilience in San Francisco Bay
The Potrero Power Station makes up approximately 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of shoreline on the east side of the San Francisco Peninsula between Pier 70 to the north and 23rd Street to the south. Beginning as early as the 1870s, the site has been home to numerous industrial activities and has not been open to the public in many years. The industrial activities ranged from sugar refining to power generation and gas manufacturing. The Potrero Power Station Project is rehabilitating the waterfront and providing a mixed-use development and public waterfront to reopen the area to the public while also providing robust protection against sea level rise and seismic-induced instability. When transforming such a sizeable post-industrial area, creative design solutions were tailored to each location to increase the grade and stabilize the slope. The solutions implemented ranged from ground improvements to retaining walls.
