Practical Enclosure Strategies for Health Care Facilities: Managing Risk, Repairs, and Modernization
Health care facility owners and managers are under constant pressure to keep buildings operational, safe, and adaptable. This includes evaluating the condition and performance of building enclosure systems while addressing aging infrastructure, renovations, deferred maintenance, capital planning needs, and changing performance expectations. On top of this, shifting priorities in response to funding sources and occupant requirements can make successful projects seem elusive. To balance these demands, informed planning can reduce avoidable disruptions, improve long-term facility performance, support operational continuity, and enable teams to implement solutions effectively.
In this webinar, we will show how multidisciplinary project teams can identify building enclosure risks and deficiencies early—including roofing, waterproofing, facade, and moisture-management concerns—to prioritize practical solutions and apply lessons learned from local and national health care facility projects.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After attending this webinar, participants will:
- Recognize how project teams can help evaluate risks, prioritize repairs, and plan practical strategies for enclosure-related issues on complex facilities.
- Plan for support and maintenance of occupied health care facilities where continuity of operations, patient care areas, and staff access must remain central to project decisions.
- Understand the difference between adaptive reuse, facade investigation, modernization, and energy-efficiency improvements for health care facilities.
- Identify where interior flooring, waterproofing, and moisture-related challenges can affect patient care areas, staff operations, and facility maintenance.
Participants will earn 1 AIA CES Learning Unit (LU/HSW) for attending the seminar. Registration is free. Please note that space is limited – email events@sgh.com to join our waitlist if the session is closed when you register.
About the Speakers
Del Bern has acquired extensive experience in construction management, risk management, and project oversight for various project types, including health care, retail, education, hospitality, and public works facilities. This experience enables him to provide creative solutions and insightful advice on industry practices. His focus on individual work trades, contracts, design teams, schedules, safety, finances, purchasing, estimating, bidding, quality assurance, permitting, risk management, and owner occupancy exemplify his commitment to overseeing well-planned projects. In addition, Del specializes in designing and constructing building enclosure materials and systems, including wood-framed, cast-in-place, precast, structural steel, and masonry structures involving exterior cladding, plaza and terrace deck waterproofing, roof systems, and below-grade waterproofing. Del also has experience investigating and remediating building enclosure deficiencies for existing buildings.
Paul Sujka has experience in the construction industry, with a focus on building enclosure consulting. He has worked on a variety of project types, providing investigation, condition assessments, rehabilitation design, new construction detailing, and construction administration services. His expertise includes fenestration, roofing, waterproofing, and contemporary wall systems. Paul has authored papers on enclosure performance and has presented them at local and national conferences. He is actively involved in advancing the practice of building enclosure design and consulting.
Corey Wowk has experience in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, designing, investigating, and rehabilitating custom curtain walls, glazing systems, rain screens, roofing, plaza, and below-grade waterproofing. He has worked on both small- and large-scale projects, including residential and commercial buildings, mixed-use high-rise facilities, and institutional and infrastructure projects. He specializes in the investigation, design, and renovation of building enclosure systems and has expertise in inspection and condition assessments, with a particular focus on resolving water leakage issues. Corey is a visiting professor at Pratt Institute’s Graduate Architecture and Urban Design Program, where he has lectured and developed coursework focused on integrated building systems and exterior enclosures.
