Sustainable Insulation Materials for High-Performance Buildings

Insulation plays a critical role in building performance, energy efficiency, and embodied carbon reduction, but selecting the right material is becoming increasingly complex. Recent advancements in conventional insulation products, alongside innovation in bio-based and low-carbon alternatives, create new opportunities and new questions for project teams.

In this webinar, we will explore how designers, owners, and contractors can evaluate insulation materials through the lens of sustainability, durability, constructability, and long-term enclosure performance. Drawing on laboratory research and project experience, we will compare conventional and emerging insulation products, review key environmental and performance considerations, and discuss practical applications for a range of building types and project goals. Attendees will leave with a framework for making informed insulation decisions that balance sustainability objectives with real-world project requirements.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret environmental and performance data commonly used to evaluate insulation materials.
  • Compare conventional and bio-based insulation products for a variety of building enclosure applications.
  • Identify factors that influence the durability, constructability, and scalability of insulation systems.
  • Apply a structured approach to insulation selection that balances sustainability goals with project performance requirements.

Participants will earn 1 AIA CES Learning Unit (LU/HSW) for attending the seminar. Registration is free. Please note that space is limited – email events@sgh.com to join our waitlist if the session is closed when you register.

About the Speakers

Joshua Machado | Associate Project Consultant

Joshua Machado recently led SGH’s laboratory research on insulation materials as part of his curriculum at Northeastern University’s Gordon Institute of Engineering Leadership. He aims to continually integrate new insights from laboratory research into his work on building enclosure projects.

Philip Moser | Associate Principal

Over decades of experience at SGH, Phil Moser seeks to learn something new every day, whether from project experience or laboratory research projects. He is passionate about finding practical ways to incorporate true sustainability into everyday work. His skepticism about greenwashing the true sustainability impacts of building decisions has led him to serve on several industry committees to develop standards for the environmental life cycle assessment of construction materials.

Daniella Roitman | Project Consultant

Daniella Roitman integrates sustainability and enclosure consulting experience in her construction project work. Alongside her building enclosure consulting work, Daniella has particular expertise in dissecting life cycle assessment data to understand the embodied carbon impacts of regularly used building products. As a Certified Passive House Verifier (CPHV), she is especially interested in building durability, energy efficiency, and sustainable enclosure strategies.
