SGH Releases 2026-2027 SE 2050 Embodied Carbon Action Plan
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) published its 2026-2027 Embodied Carbon Action Plan (ECAP), marking another step in the firm’s ongoing commitment to reducing embodied carbon under the Structural Engineering Institute’s (SEI) SE 2050 Commitment Program.
“We are honored to mark five years participating in the program and continue this important work,” said SGH Senior Consulting Engineer Julia Hogroian, who serves as SGH’s Embodied Carbon Reduction Co-champion. “In total, we have reported forty-four projects to the SE 2050 database, expanded our education and outreach efforts, and integrated carbon-reduction strategies and life-cycle assessment (LCA) into our design processes across SGH.”
The 2026-2027 Embodied Carbon Action Plan (ECAP) highlights SGH’s recent progress and key lessons learned during the program. The report outlines our ongoing efforts across education, reporting, reduction, and advocacy, including updating concrete and structural steel master specifications, presenting at industry events, launching a centralized intranet resource hub, and enhancing reporting practices to align with the program’s updated database requirements.
Looking ahead, SGH will focus on expanding embodied carbon assessments, strengthening carbon literacy across the firm, improving reporting processes, and advancing collaboration on industry standards and material testing.
This milestone also welcomes SGH Consulting Engineer Matthew Sander as an SE 2050 co-champion and honors the legacy of former SGH Associate Principal Mike Tecci, who previously served as co-champion. Mike was a passionate advocate for advancing sustainable structural design and a strong supporter of the program before his passing in 2025.
