UCLA Faculty Center
Scope/Solutions
Completed in 1959, the UCLA Faculty Center is a mid-century modern, ranch‑style structure on the east side of campus. The dining/event facility is open to UCLA faculty, staff, retirees, and alumni. A 2017 Faculty Center Improvements Center Study identified that many of the building’s systems were nearing the end of their useful life and recommended remedial work and upgrades, including replacing the existing roof assemblies. SGH collaborated with Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners, the architect of record for the renovation project, on the roofing replacement design.
SGH consulted on the replacement design for steep-slope shingle roofs and low‑slope membrane roofs. Highlights of our work include:
- Reviewing available documents related to the building’s construction, including its additions and alterations, and previous roof condition assessment reports
- Visiting the building to document the existing roofing and as-built conditions to inform the development of construction documents
- Developing conceptual reroofing recommendations for preliminary cost estimating to help the architect and university plan for the replacement project
- Reviewing the proposed roofing assemblies and recommending ways to improve the detailing and performance
- Preparing roofing specifications, reviewing architectural drawings, and helping develop transition details where the roofing meets parapets, clerestory windows, and other roof planes
- Developing details and reviewing RFIs for tie-ins to existing wall assemblies and expansion joints
- Providing engineering support during the construction phase, including reviewing related submittals, consulting on mockups, visiting the site to observe ongoing work, and helping address field conditions
