Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Instrumentation Integration & Testing Facility

Scope/Solutions

With its new Instrumentation Integration & Testing Facility, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) expands its capabilities for exploring and documenting ocean health with robotic technologies. Built on a site with high water tables and sandy soils, the design incorporates accommodations for future sea-level rise and flooding. SGH consulted on the building enclosure design for the project, which features two exterior terraces, concrete walls, and a steep slope roof with concrete tiles.

Working with Flad Architects, SGH consulted on the design for the under-slab vapor barrier and waterproofing, terrace waterproofing, exterior board-formed concrete walls with punched windows, aluminum-framed curtain walls, and steep-slope roofing. Highlights of our work include:

  • Reviewing the building enclosure design and recommending ways to improve watertightness, durability, and constructibility
  • Helping develop below-grade waterproofing details, including detailing at approximately 100 piles susceptible to fluctuating water levels
  • Advising on waterproofing strategies for the architectural concrete exterior walls, such as applying industry guidelines to reduce cracks, selecting a clear elastomeric coating to protect the walls, and recommending crack repair procedures
  • Consulting on the roof detailing, including a bird deterrent system
  • Performing construction phase services, including providing engineering support during permitting, reviewing contractor submittals, visiting the site to observe the enclosure systems’ installation to compare with the design intent, witnessing field quality control water testing, and helping the project team address field conditions
