This article discusses the application of life-cycle assessment to salvaged materials and reviews selected roofing and structural materials with good salvage potential. The feature also examines how the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC's) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED®) rating system rewards the use of salvaged materials, and considers how LEED may be improved to more appropriately reflect the environmental benefits of material reuse.
