53 State Street Roof Deck

Scope/Solutions

Exchange Place at 53 State Street includes the 1896 Boston Stock Exchange and the modern glass-clad tower. The new roof deck serves as a showpiece space for Exchange Place offering entertaining and gathering space with views of Boston’s historic Custom House clock tower and the waterfront. SGH evaluated the existing structure to support the roof deck and designed the structural supports for several new roof deck features.

SGH evaluated the existing roof structure to support the roof deck, occupants, large planters, a water feature, and a pergola. We designed structural strengthening to support the new loads and new structures, including the following:

  • Structural safety rail and glass handrail to provide unobstructed views and anchor points for window washing access
  • Modifications to the existing structure to support the new main entrance and egress ramp for the roof deck
  • Structural steel framing for the new entrance vestibule connecting to the recently renovated 12th floor conference center

SGH peer reviewed delegated designs for the egress stair headhouse and wood-framed pergola and also consulted on the ballast requirements for the wood and concrete pedestal paver systems provided by others.
