White Plains Hospital, Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery

Scope/Solutions

White Plains Hospital undertook a multi-year renovation and expansion campaign. The new Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery, with operating rooms, procedural suites, specialized clinics, and spaces dedicated to advanced imaging and non-invasive diagnostics, focuses on outpatient care. The nine-story building connects to two adjacent hospital buildings and an existing municipal parking structure through pedestrian bridges. SGH consulted on the building enclosure design for the project.

SGH consulted on the facade design, featuring aluminum‑framed storefront, unitized curtain walls, brick-clad precast concrete panels, aluminum rainscreen panels, dimension stone, wood cladding, and exposed concrete masonry units. Highlights of our work include:

Reviewing the proposed design and helping select building enclosure system:

  • Developing details to integrate the various systems and accommodate hospital‑specific systems, such as access panels for MRI scanner maintenance and enhanced waterproofing around sensitive below-grade equipment
  • Calculating wind loads on the facades and roofs
  • Evaluating the walls and glazing assemblies’ thermal and hygrothermal performance to assess the potential for condensation and determine performance values for the mechanical engineer’s energy model used to demonstrate code compliance
  • Analyzing the curtain walls and storefront to determine preliminary glazing thickness/framing sizes
  • Developing anchorage details for the precast wall panels
  • Visiting the curtain wall factory to observe production and quality control procedures
  • Providing construction-phase services, including consulting on a performance mockup, reviewing submittals, observing ongoing work, and helping address field conditions
