Wakefield Taylor Courthouse

Scope/Solutions

A Superior Court of California located in Contra Costa County, the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse was constructed in the 1930s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Judicial Council of California undertook a project to replace the building’s flat roofing assemblies. Working with the design-build team led by Swinerton, SGH consulted on the design and construction of the new roofing assembly.

The project included replacing all low-slope roof areas and adding polymethyl methacrylate-based liquid flashings at the eyebrow roofs’ concrete gutters. SGH peer reviewed the proposed design prepared by the roofing subcontractor, Enterprise Roofing, and provided engineering support during construction. Highlights of our work include:

  • Visiting the site to compare the existing conditions to those detailed in the shop drawings
  • Developing details to address specific conditions not explicitly shown on the shop drawings
  • Collaborating with the construction team to help them understand and incorporate our suggestions
  • Reviewing requests for information
  • Observing roofing installation to compare with the design intent and witnessing flood testing used to evaluate the performance
  • Helping the project team address unforeseen field conditions
