Charlottesville, VA
University of Virginia, School of Data Science
Scope/Solutions
Funded by a gift from the Quantitative Foundation, the new home for the university’s School of Data Science is a four-story building designed with classrooms, offices, and collaborative spaces for students and researchers. The project included performance goals intended to set a standard for incorporating sustainable features in future construction projects at the University of Virginia. SGH consulted on the building enclosure design and construction, provided building enclosure commissioning (BECx) services, and supported the team’s effort to achieve LEED certification.
SGH served as the building enclosure consultant and the project’s Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider (BECxP) for the project. Highlights of our work include:
- Helping establish and validate performance expectations by developing the BECx plan, outlining testing requirements, and establishing procedures for documenting and resolving construction-related issues
- Reviewing the design and providing commissioning services for the building enclosure, featuring below-grade waterproofing, brick-clad exterior walls, a fourth-floor terrace, glass curtain walls and storefront, roofing, and skylights
- Providing recommendations for improving performance and constructability
- Performing thermal and hygrothermal analyses of representative wall assemblies and evaluating other building elements that interrupt the thermal barrier to assess condensation risk
- Providing construction phase services, including reviewing contractor submittals, answering requests for information, visiting the construction site to observe installation of the enclosure systems and compare it with the design intent, witnessing fenestration performance testing, and helping the project team address complex field conditions
