Standard Shoring Designs

Scope/Solutions

To help them construct utility trenches, Bond Brothers needed standard shoring designs for temporary excavation support systems. SGH developed a library of standardized designs for use at project locations with varying site conditions.

SGH designed options for timber sheeting with timber struts and wales, and steel sheeting with hydraulic struts. Our evaluations considered many variables, such as trench depths down to 20 ft, groundwater depths as shallow as 4 ft below grade, and granular and cohesive soil types defined in OSHA Regulations 29 CFR 1926, Subpart P. We also analyzed the potential for base heave in soft cohesive soils.

We prepared a book of shoring configurations to provide options for Bond Brothers, including schedules with excavation depths, bracing elevations, bracing type, soil type, and groundwater elevations. Using this library, Bond Brothers personnel can quickly assess the site-specific conditions and select the appropriate design.
