Seismic Assessment of Pipelines

Scope/Solutions

Prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCP) are extensively used in the cooling system of power plants. SGH evaluated the seismic performance of buried PCCP pipelines in low, moderate, and high seismicity regions and recommended design changes to ensure adequate performance.

Highlights of SGH’s analyses include the following:

  • Determined seismic hazard of the site utilizing site-specific seismic ground motion studies and geotechnical reports
  • Evaluated seismic risk using calculations to compute the effect of wave propagation on the straight segments of the pipeline, horizontal and vertical bends, and vertical risers
  • Considered items, such as seismic-induced soil subsidence, liquefaction, differential ground motion from seismic wave propagation, and connection to structures supported by piles
  • Performed detailed evaluations of the underground pipelines
