Prudential Center Parking Garage

Scope/Solutions

The below-grade, cast-in-place concrete parking garage was constructed in the 1960s. The structure is bisected by interstate I-90 (forming the North and South garages) and supports the plaza and towers above. SGH has led several projects, including condition assessments and concrete and waterproofing repairs for the parking garage structure, the plaza level, and roadway structures at Ring Road above.

Working with the owner since 2006, SGH has investigated the structure’s condition and designed repair and maintenance projects. Our recent condition assessment included visually surveying the structure and sounding representative areas to document the location and extent of damage or deterioration. The concrete parking deck slabs and waterproofing coatings exhibited widespread deterioration due to long-term exposure to chlorides from deicing salts carried in by vehicular traffic. We developed a phased rehabilitation program, including concrete and waterproofing repairs, and provided cost estimates to help the owner prioritize the work and allocate funds for repairs and future maintenance.

Our condition assessment of the roadway structures at Ring Road included visually surveying and sounding representative areas of accessible structural elements, and making observations at exploratory openings to evaluate the waterproofing’s condition. SGH developed a rehabilitation program that included repairing concrete slabs and replacing the expansion joints and waterproofing system at the roadway surface. We worked with the contractor to phase the repair work, allowing the garage entrances on Ring Road to remain accessible during the project.
