Port of San Francisco On-Call Engineering
Scope/Solutions
In 2019, the Port Commission awarded four-year agreements for as-needed engineering and related services to help them with various projects at the Port of San Francisco (POSF). Working with Terra Engineers, SGH served as the structural and building enclosure engineering lead for their team’s projects.
As part of this contract, SGH performed above-water structural inspections of Piers 9, 33, 35, 45, 50, and 54. Our work including evaluating damage to the marine structures and developing repair recommendations. We evaluated the condition of existing building enclosure components, including exterior walls, windows, doors, and roofing for buildings at each of these piers.
POSF requested that SGH investigate the condition of Pier 23 following the impact from a tugboat in early 2020. The collision caused damage to fender piles and the pier apron. SGH responded to the incident within a few hours, identified structural damage, and designed repairs.
On the morning of May 23, 2020, POSF contacted SGH to investigate damage to Pier 45 following a fire that destroyed one of the sheds on the pier. SGH arrived on the scene the same day and coordinated with POSF staff to plan our investigation of the wharf. After the fire was extinguished and the historic SS Jeremiah O’Brien had been relocated, SGH evaluated the wharf’s piles and soffit to document the extent of structural damage and recommend remedial work.
