Orange County Museum of Art

Scope/Solutions

With a new home on the Segerstrom Center for the Arts campus, the Orange County Museum of Art gains more space to showcase the growing collection of modern and contemporary art and flexible areas to accommodate changing exhibits. The design embraces outdoor space with a grand stair connecting to the surrounding community and a large roof terrace serving as event space and an extension of the galleries. SGH provided fire life safety and accessibility code consulting services for the project.

The museum program included a two-story atrium, a first-floor mezzanine, exhibition space on two floors, a café and museum store, flexible event and educational spaces, a roof terrace, offices, and utility space. SGH assisted the architectural team with the design for fire life safety. Highlights of our work include the following:

  • Review project documents for general compliance with applicable codes and standards
  • Provide guidance for meeting building code, fire protection, and life safety requirements
  • Work with the city and design team to develop the fire access strategy
  • Prepare egress code compliance diagrams, indicating egress route, occupant loads, egress width, and other relevant information
