OPC Berth 6 Container Yard Design

Scope/Solutions

After constructing a modern post-Panamax wharf at Berth 6 in 2019, Operadora Portuaria Centroamericana (OPC) embarked on developing an adjacent 6.0 hectare container yard for high-density, rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane operations. SGH provided engineering services for developing and designing the new construction yard.

SGH collaborated with terminal staff to optimize the layout for the container yard, and develop its design and construction plan. Highlights of our work include:

  • Developing conceptual layouts for the construction of the container yard
  • Establishing design criteria, including options with back-to-back RTG crane operations with dense container stacking arrangements
  • Preparing opinions of probable costs
  • Designing, detailing, and preparing construction documents for the container yard
  • Providing civil engineering services, including developing site and drainage plans
  • Designing ground improvements and pavements, including plans for demolishing existing pavement
  • Consulting on utility layouts and designs, including electrical engineering for rerouting existing ductbanks and phasing the relocation of the existing electrical substation
  • Developing construction phasing for the container yard construction and its interconnection with adjacent terminal areas to help OPC maintain operations during construction
  • Provided bid support services for the container yard construction
