Flood Assessment
Scope/Solutions
In response to an assessment by the Boston Water and Sewer Commission projecting local and urban flooding in parts of campus might become more frequent and severe in the future, SGH was retained to review flood hazard data and assess the vulnerability of campus buildings and structures.
SGH assessed all campus buildings and associated equipment, utility tunnels, roofs, and pertinent below-grade areas. Highlights of our work include:
- Visually surveying the structures to identify the most vulnerable
- Analyzing the existing campus topography to locate areas with ponding potential
- Establishing a vulnerability rating for each structure based on a combination of the likelihood of occurrence of flooding and the consequence
- Developing concepts for reducing risk from drainage issues or local flooding at several locations we determined to be vulnerable
