El Camino Health Sobrato Pavilion

Scope/Solutions

Created as a hub for research through partnerships between health care providers and institutions, the Sobrato Pavilion houses El Camino Health’s Centers of Excellence in Cancer, Heart & Vascular, and Neurosciences. The building is designed in two distinct sections: the podium designed to integrate with a central campus courtyard and a tower rising above. SGH consulted on the building enclosure for the project, which also includes an adjoining 376-space parking structure.

SGH consulted on the building enclosure design for the podium, tower, and parking structure, focusing on below-grade waterproofing, exterior wall assemblies, windows and doors, and roofing assemblies. Highlights of our work include:

  • Reviewing and providing recommendations for the enclosure design
  • Recommending proposed cladding options, including glass fiber-reinforced concrete and standing seam metal panels, to help find solutions that balance the desired performance and aesthetics
  • Helping develop the design and tie-in details for exterior wall, window, waterproofing, and seismic expansion joint systems
  • Assisting with the roofing design and details, including a vegetative roof on the second level
  • Providing construction phase services, including reviewing contractor submittals, visiting the site to observe installation of the enclosure, and helping the project team address field conditions
