Contecon Manzanillo Phase 3A Marine Expansion Peer Review
Scope/Solutions
Contecon Manzanillo, S.A. de C.V. (CMSA) undertook the third-phase of an expansion project to increase its operational capacity and respond to growing trade demands. CMSA retained SGH to peer review the analysis and design for adding Berths 20 and 21 container quays, connecting them to the container yard, and implementing ground improvements for the container yard.
SGH reviewed the designs for a 180 m marginal wharf, a 227 m long finger pier, and the ground improvement for a 24 hectare container yard. Highlights of our work include:
- Evaluating the site-specific seismic spectra used by the designer of record
- Reviewing and optimizing the quay structure
- Assessing the use of rammed-aggregate piers proposed by the contractor for ground improvement in container yard areas to verify compliance with the owner’s requirements and applicable standards, evaluate the planned construction process—including sequencing, phasing with the wharf dike, and field testing requirements—and providing recommendations regarding the piers’ distribution and dimensions
- Providing recommendations for cost savings, such as optimizing the required size and length of steel pipe piles, and refining details for the pile-to-deck joint reinforcement, expansion joints, and transition slabs
