Kuwait
Al-Zour Refinery Buildings 85-B-01 and 93-SS-01
Scope/Solutions
Kuwait National Petroleum Company undertook a project to develop a new refinery along the southern coast of Kuwait, approximately 90 km south of Kuwait City, to help meet domestic and global demands for ultra-low sulphur petroleum products. The new Al-Zour Refinery has a refining capacity of 615,000 barrels per day and produces elemental sulfur and middle distillates for offshore export. SGH provided structural engineering services for two new prefabricated buildings at the refinery.
Sayed Hamid Behbehani & Sons Co. (SHBC) was awarded a contract for engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and installation of these two buildings:
- Building 85-B-01, also known as the Solids Pier Operations Building, is a three-story, 1300-ton, steel-framed structure approximately 24 m x 14 m x 21.5 m (tall) located on the solids pier utility platform
- Building 93-SS-01, also known as the Electrical Substation Building, is a one-story, 600-ton, steel-framed structure 36 m x 14 m x 9.5 m (tall) installed on the central service platform of the offshore Sea Island platform
The buildings were fabricated offsite by SHBC, loaded onto self-propelled modular transporters, transferred onto a cargo barge at a wharf, transported by the barge to the refinery site, lifted from the barge to the top of the utility platform, and anchored in place. SGH performed an evaluation of the two buildings for all loading conditions, including analyses of the structures:
- During lifting and transport, including land transportation, load-out, barge transportation, and offshore lifting
- In-place in their final, anchored condition
- Under wind and seismic loading
