Daniel Cook Named ASCE Fellow
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recognized Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) Associate Principal Daniel Cook with the distinguished honor of Fellow. The Fellow grade is one of ASCE’s highest honors, recognizing members who have made celebrated contributions and developed creative solutions that advance engineering practice. Dan was officially named a Fellow on 29 October 2025, and he will be recognized along with his co-recipients at the OPAL Awards Gala on 15 October 2026 in Reston, VA.
“ASCE has been a constant throughout my career,” said Dan. “In being named a Fellow and reflecting on my growth as an engineer and ASCE volunteer, I cannot help but think of all those who have impacted me along the way. It is a meaningful reminder that our progress as engineers is a collective journey. I am honored to share this recognition with the mentors and peers who drive our profession forward, and I remain committed to investing in the next generation as we work together to strengthen the practice of structural engineering.”
Dan specializes in structural failure investigation and repair, rehabilitation, and retrofit of modern and historic structures. His experience also includes new structural design, construction engineering, and demolition planning. Throughout his career, he has been deeply committed to sharing lessons learned from structural failures to help improve public safety and reduce the likelihood of future incidents.

Dan has been involved with ASCE for many years, first as a student at Lehigh University, then taking on leadership roles with ASCE’s Construction Institute (CI) at local and national levels. He served as the Chair for CI’s Boston Chapter from 2015 to 2016 as the Boston Society of Civil Engineers (BSCES) aligned itself with ASCE’s technical institute structure. He then ascended to the national board, where he served for nine years, including as CI President from 2020 to 2021, where he helped guide the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to his technical and professional leadership, Dan is committed to supporting the next generation of engineers through mentorship, education, and professional development. His involvement includes student and young professional initiatives and teaching roles, including guest lecturing at Lehigh University and former adjunct faculty service at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Dan remains actively involved with the CI national board, serving on its Council of Past Presidents and the ASCE2027 Program Committee, as well as the CI Temporary Works Committee. Dan is also a member of ASCE’s Committee on Career Pathways and Pipelines (CPP), ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section (BSCES).
