Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) released its 2024-2025 Embodied Carbon Action Plan (ECAP) as part of the firm’s ongoing participation in the Structural Engineering Institute’s SE 2050 Commitment program. As a signatory member since 2021, SGH has pledged to help reduce the embodied carbon of structural materials in structural design projects to net zero by the year 2050. Part of that commitment includes releasing ECAP reports with updates and information about the firm’s progress and priorities.

“SGH remains committed to reducing embodied carbon in the built environment, and we have seen great progress in achieving those goals as part of SE 2050,” said SGH Consulting Engineer Julia Hogroian, who serves as SGH’s Embodied Carbon Reduction Co-champion. “In our first three years, we have reported twenty-five projects to the SE 2050 database, presented to internal and external audiences on embodied carbon and on the program, created educational resources, and updated internal templates to incorporate life-cycle assessment and other green strategies into our structural design projects.”

The latest ECAP summarizes how SGH fulfills the four pillars of the program—Education, Reporting, Advocacy, and Reduction—and shares highlights and lessons learned from the program to date.

“The industry is open and ready to implement strategic changes to reduce embodied carbon,” said SGH Associate Principal Michael Tecci, who also serves as an SGH’s Embodied Carbon Reduction Co-champion. “We will continue to advocate for the SE 2050 program and have early conversations with clients to build confidence in the effectiveness of these embodied carbon reduction strategies.”
