Scope/Solutions
Site Double, designed by Milligram-Office and commissioned for the 2012 Venice Biennale, translates the idea of a single-family house in Detroit (near the Architect’s studio) to a Venetian gallery. Site Double, which invokes the Venice Arsenale, creates imagery of an exterior space within the Detroit-sited house by transforming the surrounding city into Venice through reflection. SGH provided structural engineering consulting services for the installation.
SGH advised on the overall structural system, which involved slender wood panels representative of the boarded-up windows seen throughout present day Detroit. SGH helped the design team by developing a method to attach the panels. Our solution provided vertical and lateral stability for the structure with hidden connections that allowed for visual continuity and accommodated the continuous mirror cladding in specific areas.
