San Francisco, CA
UCSF Mount Zion Cancer Research Center Building
Scope/Solutions
As part of an effort to plan for future projects, the University of California San Francisco undertook a ten-year renewal program to assess the condition of several of their facilities and implement repairs and required maintenance. SGH performed an assessment of the building enclosure assemblies at the Mount Zion Cancer Research Center Building and served as designer of record for the building enclosure renewal project.
SGH investigated the condition of the building’s below-grade and podium waterproofing, curtain wall, ribbon windows, walls clad with exterior insulated finish system (EIFS), skylights, and single-ply membrane roofing assemblies. Our work included estimating the remaining lifespans of the building enclosure assemblies, prioritizing required repairs and maintenance, and developing remedial recommendations for the university’s consideration.
The university subsequently retained us to design repairs and provide construction administration services for the building enclosure renewal project, including:
- Grout-injecting cracks in below-grade walls
- Replacing deteriorated planter and balcony waterproofing assemblies
- Removing the original EIFS and installing a new drainage wall EIFS assembly
- Wet-glazing window, storefront, and curtain wall systems
- Replacing aging roofing assemblies
- Installing new expansion joints
