Skewed-End Box Culverts
Scope/Solutions
Corrugated metal culverts with skew-cut ends require customized treatment to handle unbalanced loading due to cutting across the corrugations. SGH works with the culvert fabricators to analyze these conditions and design structures, such as concrete collars or headwalls to resist the unbalanced loads.
SGH has evaluated open- and closed-bottom corrugated steel and aluminum culverts in the form of box culverts, multi-radius arches, and pipe arches with
- Spans ranging from 12 ft to 65 ft
- Skew angles up to 35°
- Cover depths varying from 2 ft to 27 ft
SGH performed three-dimensional finite element analysis, including soil-structure interaction, to accurately predict the forces at the skew-cut ends. Our models consider the site- and structure-specific parameters, such as the profile, span, skew angle, fill depth, backfill characteristics, embedment, foundations, and intended end condition.
Based on the demands, SGH develops designs for concrete collars, concrete headwalls, and corrugated metal headwalls along with the associated foundations to support the unbalanced loads at the skewed ends.
