Procter & Gamble Company, Worldwide Seismic Mitigation Program

Scope/Solutions

Following the 1994 Northridge and 1995 Kobe earthquakes, Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) initiated a program for seismic risk mitigation of its owned and leased facilities worldwide. The project presented significant challenges in defining risk and developing an integrated implementation strategy to ensure the program was consistent with P&G’s objectives for mitigation, its business strategy, and its core principles.

P&G’s facilities include more than 1,500 buildings at over 200 sites on five continents. Approximately three-quarters of these sites are in areas of low to moderate seismicity, the balance being in areas of high or very high seismicity. SGH employed state-of-the-art standards and guidelines for seismic risk mitigation of new and existing facilities. Highlights of our work include the following:

  • Developed a sophisticated methodology for evaluating and ranking facilities seismic risk considering risk to life safety and capital assets, and mission interruption
  • Considered and evaluated hazards from seismic ground shaking
  • Developed a uniform set of standards to apply the risk mitigation methodology worldwide
  • Performed vulnerability assessments, detailed analyses, and special nonlinear analyses
  • Provided mitigation strategies, cost estimates, and cost benefit analyses for consideration
  • Trained local engineering resources in the standards and program
  • Designed and participated in construction phase services for many individual retrofit programs
