The Association for Preservation Technology Northeast Chapter (APTNE) held their 2015 Annual Symposium in New York on 6 February 2015.  At this symposium, Nathaniel B. Smith and Milan Vatovec gave a presentation titled, “Wood for Thought:  The Role of Wood in Preservation Projects.”

The presentation provided an overview of typical wood construction in historic renovation projects that include the repair or replacement of wood components.  They discussed typical material-related issues that may be encountered:  the basic deterioration mechanisms and how to prevent them, problems related to the hygroscopic nature of wood, as well as typical distress found in historic wood framing and elements.
