Upcoming Changes to ASCE/COPRI 61-19 Chapter on Ancillary Components

February 13, 2020

ASCE/COPRI 61-14, Seismic Design of Piers and Wharves covers the seismic design of ancillary components in a brief Chapter 8. The only ancillary components covered in any significant detail are pipelines, container cranes, and marine loading arms. Significant new changes are proposed for the chapter on ancillary components in ASCE/COPRI 61-19. The chapter is proposed to be revised to become Chapter 9 to allow the addition of other new sections within the standard. Significant additional material has been added to the chapter to expand its coverage to additional types of ancillary components. The revised chapter also will include equations for calculating component accelerations and design forces directly, without reference to other standards, and in a way that reflects the dynamic behavior of pier and wharf structures. This paper and presentation will provide examples for many of the significant changes and discuss the purpose behind these updates.
