Every fall, the LEAP Arts in Education non-profit organization hosts the Sandcastle Classic as a major fundraising event to support arts education programs in Bay Area elementary schools. On 26 October 2019, local architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms partnered with elementary school students from across the Bay Area to converge at Ocean Beach in San Francisco to build sandcastles and compete in this year’s “Let’s Play” theme.
SGH teamed up with Marchetti Group, HRA, KMD Architects, YA Studio, and the Rooftop School to form our team, The Sandy Suspenders. Together, we raised more than $4,500 for the LEAP program. The team’s sandcastle, modeled from a Nintendo Switch, was inspired by student sketches during classroom work sessions and received the competition’s “Most Ambitious Design” award. It was a fun day on the beach for kids and adults alike!
