A contemporary facade is more than the outward face of the building’s architectural expression, it is a driving factor that influences overall performance.

As California continues to embrace innovative design and impose more stringent performance standards, AEC professionals must carefully consider and reimagine the building facade. Building codes, sustainability certifications, and benchmarking programs demand more of the enclosure, including sensitivity to metrics for energy consumption and occupant comfort. New materials and assemblies, which provide optimal thermal performance and aesthetics, may affect fire and life safety performance. Complex facade geometries require more rigorous analysis of the structural systems that support and connect to the main building.

To make a beautiful, highly functional facade a reality, architects, engineers, and building professionals must understand all these design concepts and translate them into constructible details and a proof of concept – a performance mock-up.

Create + Construct brings together San Francisco’s AEC leaders to discuss trends and share best practices when designing and constructing contemporary facades.
