Mass timber construction continues to gain traction in the industry for taller buildings. While North American design and construction teams have been using  glue-laminated (glulam) products for decades, cross-laminated timber (CLT) materials – common in Europe and Australia – have begun entering the U.S. market, seeing widespread and expanding use across the country. Prior project difficulties due to a lack of building code adoption are largely being cast aside through successful experiences and evolving code provisions. In this presentation, we will examine the code challenges and opportunities for mass timber applications, discuss advantages and disadvantages of these products, explain basic elements of mass timber construction, and explore design considerations for both all-wood and hybrid construction. We will also present several case studies showing innovative applications of mass timber in recent projects.

After attending this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the opportunities for mass timber in projects where other materials predominate.
  • Understand the evolution of building code provisions and challenges associated with implementation under today’s codes.
  • Identify the variety of available system components.
  • Discuss design considerations associated with mass timber construction.

Eric Ober has extensive experience in providing consulting structural engineering services for a broad range of design, investigation, and rehabilitation projects.
