WNEV-TV Communications Tower

Newton, MA

WNEV-TV retained SGH to evaluate the adequacy of the connections in all structural members of a 985-foot communications tower for compliance with the requirements of the Electronics Industries Association Standard RS-222-D. Using a preprocessor specifically developed for this tower, SGH generated the geometry and connectivity of the model and the wind and ice loads applied at the joints, as well as the midspan bending moments.  Following a field survey, SGH developed concepts for strengthening the tower and also proposed bundling of cables to reduce wind and ice loads. SGH also recommended several means for preventing formation and separation of ice from the tower.
