Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS)

Amado, AZ

SGH led the team that developed the conceptual design of the VERITAS Optics Support Structure (OSS) Cover/Positioner. VERITAS is a ground-based gamma-ray observatory with an array of seven 10-meter optical reflectors for gamma-ray astronomy. SGH performed tradeoff studies for the development of an array of eight 10-meter telescopes. We studied other configurations, but used the original 10-meter telescope as a reference to examine the effect of variation of survival wind speed, target half-angle, focal length ratio f/D, and aperture diameter D on the weight of the telescope, and the percent of image loss.
