Matthew and Erik will be presenting several sessions as part of the two-day seminar Transformations: Re-using, Renovating, and Expanding Existing Buildings led by Pamela W. Hawkes, principal at Ann Beha Architects. Other speakers will include Carl Jay, director of historic preservation at Shawmut Construction; Peter Diana, vice president and general counsel at Carpenter & Company, Inc.; and Kevin Jensen, vice president at AHA Consulting Engineers, Inc.
WHAT: Transformations: Re-using, Renovating, and Expanding Existing Buildings is part of Harvard University's Graduate School of Design Executive Education program series. The two-day seminar is intended to provide a basic introduction to the broad issues associated with renovation and restoration and to furnish participants with tools and techniques suitable for both landmarks and less significant structures. Enrollment is open to all design professionals and offers 14 continuing education credits for AIA/CES, ASLA, and AICP.
Learning objectives include:
- Select appropriate design approaches for various projects including restoration, adaptive, and expansion or transformation.
- Evaluate overall conditions of existing buildings and potential repair strategies.
- Integrate structural, mechanical, and electrical improvements while minimizing the visual impact and cost.
- Assess compliance alternatives for life safety and ADA requirements.
- Identify ways to make existing and historic structures meet sustainable and U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines.
- Weigh market and design factors that generate profitable reuse projects.
- Consider special factors of construction, from hidden conditions and hazardous materials to estimating specialized materials and trades.
- Carry out basic historical research.
- Interpret historic landmark regulations.
